What is bacterial vaginitis?
It is also called bacterial vaginosis. It is an infection caused by bacterial or sometimes by Candida. It causes pain, vaginal discharge and itchiness along with inflammation in the vaginal area. It is caused due to changes in sex hormone levels or pH levels of the body.

Home remedies for bacterial vaginosis
There are many simple and easy natural remedies for treating this infection. Items such as tea bags, moisturizers, cold compressors and such others that are easily available in homes can be used to treat bacterial vaginitis.

  • Yogurt: Plain yogurt can be directly applied to the affected area. A yogurt-soaked tampon can also be inserted into the vagina. The bacteria present in yogurt help normalize the bacterial balance in the body.
  • Tea bags: A tea bag soaked in cold water and then cooled in the refrigerator can be applied to the vaginal area. It helps relieve the itchiness caused by the infection.
  • Cold compressors: When applied directly to the vaginal area, they help give relief from redness, swelling and skin irritation caused by the vaginitis.
  • Moisturizer: When applied externally, it helps relieve itchiness by soothing the skin around the vagina.
  • Tea tree oil: It can be used in the tub while having a bath or a can be applied directly to the vaginal area. Its antibacterial properties that help rid the body of the infection causing bacteria.
  • Boric acid: A douche of boric acid can be used. It helps control the multiplication of harmful bacteria. Some women might be sensitive or allergic to boric acid and should be careful.
  • Warm bath: A simple warm bath can be soothing and can relieve itchiness and inflammation. Cider vinegar can be added to the bath tub. It helps get rid of the toxins and treat infection.


Diet for bacterial vaginosis

Although there is no specific diet that is recommended, adding some foods to the diet and eliminating some others can go a long way in countering the infection. Those suffering from this bacterial infection should have a balanced and healthy diet, with lots of vegetables and fruits. Flax seed, whole grains, fish, poultry, along with lot of water and vitamin supplements are beneficial. It is advisable to avoid alcohol as well as fatty and sugary processed foods.

Causes of bacterial vaginosis
Some of the common causes of this infection are hormonal imbalances, bacterial level imbalance, poor hygiene. The infection can even be sexually transmitted in some cases.

Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis

The common symptoms are redness and itching around the vagina, smelly discharge accompanied by inflammation and pain or even bleeding during urination or sex. There may also be swelling in the skin around the vagina.
